Course Recognition

Why apply?

MNTB Course Recognition is open to in-house or public courses delivered anywhere in the world. Through the scheme, we formally recognise training courses that are effective, quality assured and answer specific needs within the maritime industry.

Achieving recognition aligns your course with the MNTB’s well-respected brand and autonomy, allowing it to carry a globally recognised MNTB ‘quality mark’ on all materials. This significantly enhances its profile and credibility in the marketplace.

At the same time, having access to rigorous and highly detailed expert evaluation is a very effective way of improving the quality of your training.

The scheme is ISO9001 accredited and has the full involvement and support of the UK Chamber of Shipping, the trade association for the UK shipping industry.

“The process for West Nautical to gain the ‘MNTB Recognised’ status for our Superyacht Captain course was very detailed, and we had to produce a large amount of supporting evidence to achieve this accolade. This gives us full confidence in the quality control process and, therefore, the prestige in receiving it. It was a pleasure to have the MNTB join our inaugural course and they have actively promoted and marketed it, which has assisted in our objective of selling all available spaces.”
Geoff Moore, Managing Director, West Nautical

How to apply

Course operators can apply directly to the MNTB for assessment under the Course Recognition scheme (click here to download the submission form). We would be happy to arrange a pre-application discussion – free of charge – to ensure the scheme meets your needs and that you are clear on all its requirements.

On formal application, an initial registration fee of £250 (plus VAT where applicable) is payable. This fee is waived for UK Chamber of Shipping members.

How it works

A thorough assessment determines whether the course is ready to undergo the full evaluation process. Should the application be rejected at this initial stage, we will provide a detailed report, explaining the reasons for our decision. Course operators are welcome to re-apply at a later date, once they are confident of having filled any gaps we’ve identified.

The full evaluation process is subject to a separate fee, including agreed expenses for the site visit. The course will be assessed against a set of 16 key criteria. These help the assessor to determine: the course’s ability to meet industry and/or company needs; how well it is planned and delivered; and how it fits with nationally or internationally recognised standards.

After onsite evaluation is complete, successful courses will be able to display the MNTB ‘quality mark’ on promotional materials and course stationery for an initial three-year period.

Full guidance on the evaluation process and the 16 Course Recognition criteria is contained in the Good Practice Guidelines, which can be downloaded here
